BOSTON ISOSCELES
URBAN DESIGN

lV Year, Sem. ll

SITE [Converted].png

My site is located between Tremont and Charles street north of the isosceles nestled at the southern tip of the theater district. The northeast corner is anchored by an odd drum church while the northern edge is loose and not defined in any meaningful manner, left as residue from the housing development on Charles and Tremont. Slightly offset from the center is a passage through the existing housing that lines the edge of the block. This passage leads to a road that lines the backs of both Charles and Tremonts program. Many theaters and entertainment spaces line this block and in fact some don’t view it as a back. Hence the discovery of the “crack” in the block.

My project decided to frame this back alley as well as frame the park. Offering resolution to an undecided edge and opening a gateway in between the fabric of the theater district. So zooming in My building relies on  architectural motifs in which to execute the urban reading I have made. Starting  with housing, I extended the housing along Tremont vertically by 7 stories, sharing the core of the existing housing and creating 119 total new units. On the public side of my program I decided to center the tail end of my project on the performing arts, located within the “crack” is a set of twin performance spaces, 1 a public proscenium theater holding a capacity of 250 persons and the other, a multiuser- vertical vineyard theater holding a capacity of 1,830 persons. Mediating between the two performance spaces as well as the main road and the alley is the lobby space that contains a central atrium that then leaks out in to the park via a cafe/ resting space at the base of the building. Together these motifs or elements construct relationship indicative of the urban reading I made prior. The public stair is located within the alley and through the introduction of a diagonal member the stair then opens up to the park connecting the park with the alley, with the piano nobile.
